The Muntons Gold Home Brew Kit Range sits in the mid-premium tier of the Muntons family — a significant step up from standard extract kits, using higher-quality malt extracts for beers with noticeably more body, flavour complexity, and character. Each 3kg kit produces approximately 40 pints of impressive home brew beer at around 75p per pint.
Muntons have been malting barley in Suffolk since 1921, and the Gold range reflects decades of expertise in producing consistently excellent malt extract. These are serious kits for brewers who want more than a standard supermarket tin can offer.
Available in six classic styles: India Pale Ale, Continental Pilsner, Dockland Porter, Highland Heavy Ale, Old English Bitter, and Imperial Stout.
About the Beer Styles
- India Pale Ale — A robust, hop-forward IPA with a resinous bitterness, citrus aromas, and a dry, satisfying finish. One of the best IPA kits in the mid-range.
- Continental Pilsner — A crisp, clean European-style lager with a delicate hop character and refreshingly dry finish. Best served cold.
- Dockland Porter — A rich, dark porter with roasted malt notes, hints of chocolate and coffee, and a smooth, warming finish. Deeply satisfying.
- Highland Heavy Ale — A classic Scottish-style heavy with a malty, slightly sweet character, low hop bitterness, and a full, rounded body.
- Old English Bitter — A well-balanced traditional British bitter with earthy hop character, a clean malt backbone, and a dry, pleasantly bitter finish.
- Imperial Stout — A bold, high-gravity stout with intense roasted malt flavours, dark fruit notes, and a warming, complex finish. A showstopper for dark beer lovers.
What's Included
Each kit contains a 3kg pouch of premium hopped malt extract and a yeast sachet. Add water and sugar (or ideally spray malt for better body and head) and ferment for 10–14 days. Full instructions included.
What Equipment Do You Need?
A 25-litre fermentation bucket, airlock, hydrometer, siphon, and bottles or a pressure barrel. Our home brew starter kits have everything in one bundle. A good sanitiser is essential — StarSan and VWP are our recommendations.
Tips for Best Results
- Replace plain sugar with light spray malt for a fuller body and better head retention
- Ferment at 18–20°C for a clean, well-rounded result
- The Imperial Stout in particular benefits from extended conditioning — try leaving it 4–6 weeks in the bottle
- Use a quality ale yeast like Fermentis S-04 or Mangrove Jack's M42 for a cleaner finish
