Home Brewing Equipment

To brew beer, wine or cider from a kit you need a fermenter with an airlock, a hydrometer to check fermentation, a syphon to transfer the brew, a steriliser or sanitiser, and either bottles with caps or a pressure barrel. This collection has all of those plus upgrades like auto syphons, digital density meters and kegging parts. If you're starting from nothing, a starter kit bundles the basics together.

Frequently Asked Questions
What equipment do I need to start home brewing?

For your first beer or wine kit: a fermenter of 25L or more with a lid and airlock, a hydrometer, a syphon, a sanitiser such as ChemSan, a stirring paddle, and bottles with caps and a capper (or a pressure barrel). A starter kit includes most of this in one box.

What size fermenter do I need?

Most beer kits and 30-bottle wine kits make about 23 litres, so a 25L to 30L fermenter leaves room for the foam. Six-bottle wine kits make about 4.5 litres and suit a 5L demijohn.

Do I really need a hydrometer?

Yes. A hydrometer is the only reliable way to know fermentation has finished before you bottle. Bottling too early can over-carbonate bottles. It also lets you work out your ABV.

What is an auto syphon?

An auto syphon starts the flow with one pump of the cane, so you don't have to suck on the tube. That makes transferring from the fermenter cleaner and leaves the sediment behind.

Should I bottle or keg my home brew?

Bottling is cheap and makes beer easy to share. A pressure barrel such as a King Keg is quicker to fill and serves straight from the tap. Kegging with CO2 gives the most control over carbonation.
