The Solomon Grundy Gold 30 Bottle Wine Kit Range is one of the best-value home wine making kits available in the UK. Each kit produces 30 bottles of genuinely enjoyable wine using quality grape concentrates, with a simple 6-step process that's ideal for beginners and experienced home winemakers alike.
Available in eight popular varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Piesporter, and Zinfandel Rosé. There's a style to suit every palate, from bone-dry whites to full-bodied reds.
Solomon Grundy Gold vs Classic vs Platinum
The Solomon Grundy range comes in three tiers. The Gold range offers an excellent step up from the budget Classic kits, using higher-quality concentrate for noticeably better flavour and body. If you want to go further, the Platinum range uses even richer concentrate and produces a more complex, premium-style wine.
What's Included
Each kit contains grape concentrate, yeast, finings, stabiliser, and full instructions. Just add water and 3kg of granulated sugar (or 3.3kg brewing sugar/dextrose) (not included). No specialist knowledge required.
What Equipment Do You Need?
A 23-litre fermentation bucket, airlock, hydrometer, siphon, and 30 bottles or a suitable storage vessel. Our home brew starter kits include everything in one bundle if you're just getting started. Always sanitise with VWP or ChemSan — it makes a significant difference to the clarity and taste of your finished wine.
Choosing (and upgrading) your yeast
The best upgrade depends on which style you're making. For a red (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz): try Mangrove Jack's CR51, bred for light, fruity reds. For a dry white (Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc): Mangrove Jack's CL23 keeps it crisp and clean. For the off-dry styles (Piesporter, Zinfandel Rosé): Mangrove Jack's MA33 suits their fruitier, slightly sweeter character. If your fermenting spot runs cold over winter (often under 15°C), Lalvin EC-1118 is a reliable fallback across styles.
How Long Does It Take?
Fermentation typically takes 5–7 days at 18–22°C, followed by clearing and stabilising (usually another 24–48 hours). The wine can be bottled and drunk shortly after, though 2 weeks of conditioning in the bottle improves it considerably.
Cost Per Bottle
At £22.99 for 30 bottles, this works out at under 77p per bottle — exceptional value compared to buying wine in the shops.
Also available in a 6-bottle Gold format if you'd like to try a variety first. Browse all wine kits at BrewCo.
