Thomas Coopers Wheat Malt Extract (1.5kg) is made from malted wheat and pale malt, producing a softer mouthfeel and significantly improved head retention when added to beer recipes. Use in conjunction with any beer kit or malt extract recipe to add wheat character, haze, and body.

Particularly useful when brewing wheat beers and hefeweizens alongside the Preacher's Hefe Wheat Kit. Also adds a creamy quality to pale ales and golden ales. Use alongside Light Malt Extract for a mixed-malt extract brew, and ferment with Gervin GV12 Ale Yeast. See also: Amber Malt Extract and Dark Malt Extract.

Frequently asked questions

What is wheat malt extract?

Wheat malt extract is a concentrated syrup made by mashing malted wheat (blended with pale barley malt) and evaporating the resulting wort. It gives you all the fermentables and character of a wheat grain mash without any mashing — just stir it into your brew.

What does wheat malt do in beer?

Wheat contributes extra protein, which means noticeably better head retention, a fuller, softer mouthfeel, and the gentle haze characteristic of wheat beer styles. Even a small addition improves the foam on pale ales and golden ales.

Can I use wheat malt extract instead of brewing sugar?

Yes — and your beer will be better for it. Replacing the 1kg of sugar in a standard beer kit with 1.5kg of wheat malt extract adds body, flavour and head retention rather than just alcohol, avoiding the thin, cidery character sugar can create.

How much wheat malt extract should I use?

As a kit upgrade, use the full 1.5kg tin in place of sugar for a 23-litre batch. In extract recipes, wheat extract typically makes up 20–50% of the fermentables for a wheat-influenced beer, or up to 100% for a full hefeweizen.
