Getting conversions right on brew day

What it does: four converters in one place: weight, volume (including UK and US gallons and pints), temperature, and Brix to gravity.

How to use it: pick a tab, enter the amount, choose the units to convert from and to, and press Convert. The arrows swap the two units round.

The formulas in plain words: weight and volume are converted through grams and millilitres. A UK gallon is 4.546 litres, but a US gallon is only 3.785 litres. A UK pint is 568ml. For temperature, °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32, and the reverse is (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9.

Worked example: an American recipe is written for 6 US gallons. That's 22.7 litres, almost the same as 5 UK gallons (22.7 litres) and a 40-pint UK kit (about 22.7 litres). A mash temperature of 152°F is about 66.7°C.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
No. A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon is 3.785 litres. Check which one a recipe means, especially if it comes from an American website or book.
How many litres is a 40-pint kit?
40 UK pints is about 22.7 litres, which is why most beer kits are made up to 23 litres.
Are UK and US fluid ounces the same?
No. A UK fluid ounce is about 28.4ml and a US fluid ounce is about 29.6ml.
