How the recipe generator works

What it does: pick one of 12 beer styles, from English Bitter and Dry Irish Stout to West Coast IPA and Saison, choose your batch size and method, and the generator writes a full recipe with fermentables, hops, yeast and step-by-step instructions. You can add everything to your basket, or download the recipe as a PDF or BeerXML file for your brewing software.

How to use it: choose a style, then a batch size (10, 19 or 23 litres). Choose extract if you're new to brewing, or all-grain if you mash your own grain. For extract, choose dry spray malt or liquid malt extract, and pick a hop character.

How the quantities work: each recipe is written for 19 litres, and every ingredient is scaled in proportion to the batch size you choose. Each style shows its target OG, FG and bitterness. ABV is worked out as (OG − FG) × 131.25.

Worked example: the West Coast IPA targets an OG of 1.058 and an FG of 1.010, which gives about 6.3% ABV. Choose 23 litres instead of 19 and every ingredient goes up by about 21% (23 ÷ 19), so the strength stays the same.

Take gravity readings as you go and check your final strength with the ABV calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose extract or all-grain?
Extract is simpler and quicker, and is the best place to start. All-grain means mashing crushed malt yourself. It takes more time and kit, but gives you full control over the recipe.
Will I hit the exact OG in the recipe?
Close, but not always exactly. With all-grain, your efficiency and volumes make a difference. Take a reading and adjust with water or extract if you need to.
Can I use the recipe in my brewing software?
Yes. Download the BeerXML file and import it into any software that reads BeerXML.
