This alcoholometer, or spirit hydrometer, reads alcohol strength directly from 0 to 100% ABV in distilled spirit. Use it to check what comes off your still and to dilute accurately to drinking strength before you add a flavouring.
Key features
- Reads % ABV straight off the scale - no gravity sums needed
- Full 0-100% range, from raw distillate down to diluted spirit
- Calibrated for spirit (alcohol and water), not for beer or wine
Specs
- Range: 0-100% ABV
- Supplier code: YH-5340 (Young's)
How to use
Fill a trial jar with spirit, float the alcoholometer in it and read the scale where the surface meets the stem. Readings change with temperature, so test at room temperature. Add water a little at a time until you hit your target, for example 40% ABV for most Still Spirits flavourings.
Who it's for
Anyone distilling at home who wants accurate strength readings. For beer and wine, use a standard Wine & Beer Hydrometer instead, as an alcoholometer will not read sugary liquids correctly.
Complete the set
- Trial Jar (Plastic) - to float the alcoholometer in
- Still Spirits Air Still - compact still for small batches
- Still Spirits T500 Copper Condenser & Boiler (UK) - larger reflux still for 25 L washes
- Still Spirits Easy Filter System - carbon-filter the spirit before flavouring
- Still Spirits Top Shelf Flavourings - add once your spirit is at the right strength
Please note: in the UK, distilling spirits requires a licence from HMRC.
