Frequently Asked Questions
What does the SmartRef measure?

It's a digital refractometer covering many measurement units. Uses include the extract content of beer wort, sugar content in fruit and vegetables, salinity in saltwater aquariums and pools, moisture in honey and TDS in coffee.

Can I use it for home brewing?

Yes - it measures the extract content of beer wort, giving you a quick reading of your wort before fermentation. It's also handy around the home for honey, coffee and more.

Can I use it to check when fermentation has finished?

Refractometers are best for unfermented wort or juice, because once alcohol is present the reading is skewed and needs a correction. For final gravity, most brewers use a hydrometer or a density meter such as the EasyDens.

How big a sample does it need?

Like other refractometers, it only needs a few drops of liquid, so you lose very little wort per reading.

Although on the pricey side this is a useful bit of kit. Not only does it act as an accurate refractometer using a couple of drops of wort during the mash but it also doubles up with the easy dens as an alochol measurement device
