How to brew it

  1. Clean and sanitise your kit - ChemSan is a no-rinse sanitiser.
  2. Warm the pouch in hot water for 15 minutes, pour the malt into the fermenter and rinse the pouch out.
  3. Add 3 litres of boiled water and 1kg of brewing sugar, stir to dissolve, then top up to 23 litres with cold water.
  4. At 20-25°C add the yeast, fit an airlock and leave for 14 days.
  5. Bottle once your hydrometer reads 1008 or below, priming with a heaped teaspoon of sugar per 500ml bottle. Keep warm for 5 days, then move somewhere cooler to clear.

The yeast needs the full two weeks - fermentation slows right down in the second week, so don't bottle early. Coopers Carbonation Drops make priming quick. A good first kit for anyone who mainly drinks lager. Browse the Better Brew range for more.

Frequently Asked Questions
How strong is Better Brew Export Lager?

The maker gives about 4.6% ABV when brewed to 23 litres with 1kg of brewing sugar.

What else do I need?

1kg of brewing sugar, a fermenter with an airlock, a hydrometer, sanitiser, and bottles with caps or a keg.

When can I bottle it?

After 14 days, once your hydrometer reads 1008 or below. If it is higher, leave it a few more days.

Why does it take two weeks?

Better Brew uses genuine brewing yeast that ferments slowly near the end, so the last few gravity points can take another week to drop.
