Brewco Protafloc Tablets are a copper fining for all-grain and extract brewers: drop one into the boil and it helps proteins clump together and settle out, giving clearer beer. Each pack holds 10 tablets.
How it works
- Made from carrageenan, a natural extract of red seaweed (Irish moss)
- Binds haze-forming proteins in the hot wort so they settle with the trub
- Leaves clearer wort going into the fermenter and a brighter, more stable finished beer
Specs
- Pack size: 10 tablets
- Added: in the boil, near the end
- For: beers made with a boil - all-grain, partial mash or extract
How to use
Add towards the end of the boil, not at the start, or the active ingredient breaks down - see the How to Use box.
Who it's for
Anyone boiling their own wort, from brew-in-a-bag to full all-grain setups. Protafloc isn't needed for kits that aren't boiled - use Young's Beer Finings in the fermenter instead. For great-looking beer, follow up with Beer Heading Liquid for head retention.

How to Use
Pack treats
20 brews
10 tablets
When
10 min before end of boil
Used for: Kettle finings for all-grain brewing - proteins drop out as the wort cools, for clearer beer and less chill haze.
When: In the boil, 10 minutes before the end.
Step by step
1Break a tablet in half - half a tablet treats 25 litres.
2Drop it into the boiling wort 10 minutes before the end of the boil.
3Cool the wort as usual - the protein (cold break) settles and is left behind.
Good to know: Added too early in the boil it breaks down and stops working. Overdosing just means more sediment and more beer lost.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Protafloc?
A kettle fining made from carrageenan (Irish moss). It makes proteins clump and drop out as the wort cools, giving clearer beer.
How much do I use?
Half a tablet per 25 litres, so a pack of 10 does 20 brews.
When do I add it?
10 minutes before the end of the boil. Added too early it breaks down and stops working.
Do I need it for beer kits?
No - it's for brews you boil yourself (all-grain or extract). Kit beers are already boiled; use beer finings instead.
