Crisp Rice Hulls are an all-grain brewing aid that keeps sticky mashes flowing. A by-product of the rice industry, the inert, fibrous hulls form a filter bed in the mash tun, which helps when your grain bill is heavy with wheat, rye or oats. This 1kg bag suits regular all-grain brewers.

What they do

  • Form an open filter bed in the mash, improving run-off and wort clarity
  • Flavourless, with no aroma
  • Do not soak up much wort, so your yield is kept

How much to use

Crisp recommends 1-5% of the grist weight, depending on how much wheat, rye or oats is in the recipe. Mix the hulls evenly through the grain so the whole bed drains well.

As a guide, 1-5% of a 5kg grain bill is 50-250g, so a 1kg bag covers several brews.

Useful with

  • Wheat Malt - for wheat beers, where a stuck mash is common
  • Rye Malt - rye is notoriously sticky
  • Flaked Oats - for smooth oatmeal stouts and hazy pales

Ideal for anyone brewing on a Grainfather or other all-grain system. Also available in 500g and 250g bags.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do rice hulls change the taste of the beer?

No. Crisp says they are flavourless and add no aroma.

How much should I add?

Crisp recommends 1-5% of the grist by weight, using more when the recipe has a lot of wheat, rye or oats.

Do I need to crush them?

No. Add them whole and mix them evenly through the grain so they help filtration throughout the mash.

Will they reduce my efficiency?

Crisp says the hulls do not absorb significant amounts of wort, so yield is preserved.
