This 500g bag of Crisp Rice Hulls is a handy size for brewers who make the odd wheat beer, rye ale or oat-heavy stout and want to avoid a slow or stuck sparge. The hulls are a natural by-product of rice milling and open up the grain bed so wort drains freely.
What they do
- Form an open filter bed in the mash, improving run-off and wort clarity
- Flavourless, with no aroma
- Do not soak up much wort, so your yield is kept
How much to use
Crisp recommends 1-5% of the grist weight, depending on how much wheat, rye or oats is in the recipe. Mix the hulls evenly through the grain so the whole bed drains well.
For a typical 5kg home brew grain bill, that works out at 50-250g, so this bag usually covers two or more batches.
Useful with
- Wheat Malt 2.5kg - high-wheat grists drain slowly
- Oat Malt - adds silky body but can gum up a mash
- Torrefied Wheat - helps head retention in British ales
Also available as a 1kg bag for regular brewers, or 250g to try them out.
