Heart Of England Barley Wine is a home brew kit for one of the strongest and richest styles of English ale. Our supplier lists it as a 24 pint kit - a smaller batch than most beer kits, which suits a strong beer you sip rather than session.
About the kit
- From the Heart of England range by Hamstead Brewing Centre in Great Barr, in the West Midlands
- Makes about 24 pints
- Style: English barley wine - full-bodied, warming and malt-led
About the style
Barley wine is a traditional strong English ale, usually rich in malt with notes of caramel and dark fruit. It is often served in smaller glasses and many brewers like to let it mature in the bottle for a while before drinking.
You'll also need
- A 25 Litre Fermentation Vessel with Tap with an airlock
- A Wine & Beer Hydrometer to check fermentation has finished
- ChemSan - a no-rinse sanitiser for everything that touches the beer
- Bottles and caps or a barrel, plus Coopers Carbonation Drops if you bottle
How to brew it
Sanitise your equipment, follow the instructions in the pack, and give it time: strong beers are worth waiting for. Use the Priming Sugar Calculator to work out how much sugar to prime with at bottling.
Who it's for
Ale drinkers who enjoy big, warming beers, and kit brewers who want to try something stronger. For a session ale from the same range, try Heart Of England Best Bitter.
