This 2.5kg bag of Thomas Fawcett Mild Ale Malt gives you a good share of the grist for a traditional English mild. The malt is stewed slightly before kilning, so it is darker, sweeter and maltier than pale ale malt.

Why brewers use it

  • A sweet, strongly malty aroma and flavour
  • More colour than standard pale ale malt
  • Full body - the backbone of a proper dark mild
  • Most of its enzymes survive kilning, so it can be used at high rates and convert fully

Specifications

  • Maltster: Thomas Fawcett & Sons, Castleford
  • Type: speciality base malt, stewed slightly before kilning
  • Colour: 7.5-9.0 EBC, maltster's typical analysis
  • Typical use: the main malt in milds; blend with pale malt elsewhere
  • Pack size: 2.5kg, supplied crushed

How to use it

Use it as most or all of the grist for a mild, or blend it with pale ale malt to add malt depth to other British styles. Its diastatic power is lower than pale malt, but high enough for full conversion.

Who it's for

Home brewers making milds and darker session ales, or anyone wanting to add malt depth to a brown ale or porter.

Also available in: 1kg, 5kg

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between mild ale malt and pale ale malt?

Mild ale malt is stewed slightly before kilning at a higher temperature, so it is darker, sweeter and maltier than pale ale malt.

Can mild ale malt be the only malt in a recipe?

Thomas Fawcett say most of its enzymes are preserved, so it can be used at high percentages of the grist and convert fully. Most milds also add some crystal or dark malt for colour.

Is it crushed?

Yes, it is supplied crushed and ready for the mash tun.

Why choose the 2.5kg bag?

It suits a mild where mild ale malt makes up a large part of the grist, or several blended brews.
