Yeast Nutrient provides the nitrogen, trace elements, and minerals that yeast needs to ferment fully and healthily. Particularly important when brewing fruit wines, meads, or high-gravity beers where natural nutrient levels may be insufficient for a complete fermentation.

Use approximately 1 teaspoon per 4.5 litres. Add at the start of fermentation or if fermentation becomes sluggish.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need to use yeast nutrient?
Yeast nutrient is most important for fruit wines, meads, and high-gravity beers (above 1.070 OG). Fruit musts and sugar washes lack the natural nutrients found in malt wort, which can cause sluggish or stuck fermentations. For standard beer kits, malt wort provides sufficient nutrients and yeast nutrient is optional.
Can I add yeast nutrient to rescue a stuck fermentation?
Yes — adding yeast nutrient alongside Gervin GV7 Restart Yeast is a good strategy for stuck fermentations. Dissolve a teaspoon in warm water and add to the fermenter. The extra nutrients help support a fresh yeast charge in completing the fermentation.
How much yeast nutrient should I use?
Use approximately 1 teaspoon (5g) per 4.5 litres. For a standard 23-litre batch, 20–25g is typical. Don't use excessive amounts — too much nutrient can contribute off-flavours and overly rapid fermentation. Follow the recommended rate.
Does yeast nutrient affect the flavour of the finished wine or beer?
At correct rates, yeast nutrient has no detectable effect on flavour. It's consumed by the yeast during fermentation. If used in excess, it can potentially contribute a slightly yeasty or harsh note — stick to the recommended amount.
Is yeast nutrient the same as yeast energiser?
Not quite. Yeast nutrient provides nitrogen and minerals. Yeast energiser typically contains these plus vitamins and other compounds for more aggressive fermentation support. For most home brewing purposes, standard yeast nutrient is sufficient.
