Brew for Christmas 2026: Brew-By Dates for Wine, Beer & Cider Kits

If you want your own wine, beer or cider on the table on 25 December, the work starts earlier than you think. Kits that look quick on the box still need time to clear, settle and condition, and a rushed bottle never tastes as good as one left alone. We've pulled the key dates into one place, and the full range is gathered in our Brew for Christmas collection.

Your Christmas 2026 brew-by dates at a glance

  • Winexpert Apres dessert wines and Winexpert Reserve kits (about 6 weeks): start by 8 November
  • Winexpert Classic and Island Mist (about 4 weeks): start by 22 November
  • Beer kits (1–2 weeks fermenting plus 2–3 weeks conditioning): start by 22 November
  • 7-day wine kits such as WineBuddy and SG Wines (about a week plus 2 weeks to clear): start by 4 December

These dates assume Christmas Day is the day you want to be pouring. If you'd like a spare week for gifting bottles or a Christmas Eve do, start a week earlier. You'll find everything for each date in the Brew for Christmas collection.

8 November: dessert wines and Reserve kits

The longest-lead kits go on first. Winexpert Apres dessert wines and Winexpert Reserve kits need around six weeks, and they reward patience. Dessert wines in particular are sweet, rich and meant for small glasses beside the pudding, so they're a natural fit for the day itself.

  • Check your fermentation temperature is steady. A heat belt or pad helps in a cold kitchen or garage.
  • Don't skip degassing. Trapped CO₂ is the usual reason a wine won't clear on schedule.
  • If you're running behind by a week, drop the extra bottle-ageing time rather than the clearing time.

Browse our wine making range for the equipment and additives these kits call for.

22 November: Winexpert Classic and Island Mist

At about four weeks, Winexpert Classic kits sit in the middle of the schedule. A red such as the Chilean Malbec or the Spanish Tempranillo will be drinkable on the day, and Island Mist fruit-style wines make an easy crowd-pleaser for the non-red drinkers. Our Christmas collection groups these together.

22 November: beer kits

Beer needs the same date but for a different reason. You're allowing 1–2 weeks fermenting and then 2–3 weeks conditioning in the bottle, and the conditioning is where the beer comes together. Beer that's been bottled for a fortnight tastes noticeably better than beer bottled for four days.

Keep conditioning bottles somewhere around room temperature for the first fortnight, then move them somewhere cooler. Stronger beers like imperial stouts and dubbels have more yeast stress to recover from, so start those on the earlier side of the date.

4 December: 7-day wine kits

This is your last-minute option. Kits like WineBuddy and SG Wines (such as the SG Wines Classic 30 Bottle Red) need about a week to ferment and two weeks to clear. That's three weeks, which takes you to Christmas Day if you start by 4 December. It's a tight finish, so have everything ready beforehand: sanitiser, bottles, corks and finings.

  • Order corks or swing-top bottles before the postal rush.
  • Wines that have cleared fully in the fermenter bottle brighter, so give them every day of the clearing time.

What about cider?

Cider kit timings vary quite a lot between brands, so we haven't put a single date on them. Read the timings on your kit, count back from 25 December, and allow extra time for conditioning, especially if you want it sparkling. Our cider making collection has apple, pear and fruit ciders, and the Brew for Christmas collection is the best place to see what's ready to ship now.

A simple Christmas brewing calendar

  • Late October: check your kit, yeast and sanitiser, and order anything missing.
  • By 8 November: Winexpert Apres and Reserve on.
  • By 22 November: Winexpert Classic, Island Mist and your beer kits on.
  • By 4 December: final 7-day wine kits on.
  • Mid to late December: bottle, label and tuck everything away to settle - the 7-day wines last, once they have fully cleared.
