What Actually Separates Them
Solomon Grundy Classic and Gold – best value

The budget end of the range. Classic and Gold use standard grape concentrate and need you to add your own sugar (Gold needs 3kg granulated, or 3.3kg brewing sugar). They're perfectly enjoyable everyday wines and the cheapest way into 30-bottle kits, but the flavour is simpler than the premium tiers. Gold, available in eight varieties, is a noticeable step up from Classic for not much more money.
WineBuddy – the familiar name

Also made by Young's, and one of the best-known wine kit brands in the UK. Ready in 7 days like Cellar 7, but needs 4kg of sugar adding yourself, which keeps the price down to budget-tier territory while still giving a genuine 30-bottle yield. A solid middle ground if you want Young's quality without Cellar 7's premium price.
Cellar 7 – fastest to drink, nothing to add

Made by Young's, and built around speed and convenience: a finished, drinkable wine in about 7 days, with everything included so there's no sugar to add. It's premium-tier concentrate with real varietal character, and the widest range of any kit we stock, 15 varieties including several fruit blends like Summer Berries and Peach & Mango.
Cantina – authentic regional character, no sugar

Cantina kits are based on specific Italian wine regions, like the Tuscan hills for the Red, and everything needed is in the box — no sugar to add. Ready in 7 days like the other quick kits here. If you want a wine that tastes like it's trying to be a particular style of Italian wine, rather than a generic red or white, this is the one to look at.
Solomon Grundy Platinum – the most complex of the 7-day kits

The top of the Solomon Grundy range, using higher-grade concentrate for more body and depth than Gold. No sugar needed, and still ready in around 7 days. This is the one to choose if you want the closest thing to a shop-bought bottle without waiting weeks for it.
Magnum – budget price, a little more patience

Also 30 bottles, and the cheapest kit on this list per bottle, but it needs 3.5kg of sugar adding and takes around 2 weeks rather than 7 days. A great everyday wine if you don't mind the slightly longer wait and doing the sugar yourself.
On The House – the first step up from 7-day kits

Six litres of grape concentrate, no sugar needed, and ready in around 4 weeks — a step beyond the fast kits above in body and character, without moving into serious premium pricing. A good choice if you're happy to plan a month ahead for a noticeably better everyday wine.
Beaverdale – clean, varietally expressive, still no sugar

Ready in 4–6 weeks with no sugar to add. Beaverdale is known for clean, balanced wines with real varietal character — our widest range of grape-specific 30-bottle reds, whites and rosé, from Cabernet Sauvignon to Pinot Noir.
Winexpert Classic, Reserve and Private Reserve – slow, but genuinely premium

These three are the odd ones out on timeline: all take 4 weeks or more, not 7 days, because each uses a progressively larger volume of higher-grade concentrate — Classic isn't stated by volume, Reserve uses 10 litres, and Private Reserve tops out at 14 litres. No sugar needed on any of them. If you don't mind the wait, each step up is a noticeably more serious wine than the last: real varietal character, proper body, and worth planning ahead for rather than an impulse buy. Private Reserve in particular is aimed at replicating specific commercial regions and styles as closely as a kit can.
Which Should You Choose?
- Tightest budget: Magnum or Solomon Grundy Classic
- Want it drinkable fastest, nothing to add: Cellar 7 or Cantina
- Familiar brand, don't mind adding sugar: WineBuddy
- Want proper regional character: Cantina
- Want the most complex 7-day result: Solomon Grundy Platinum
- Happy to wait a month for a step up: On The House or Beaverdale
- Happy to wait longer for the best possible result: Winexpert Reserve or Private Reserve
All of them need the same basic equipment: a 23 litre fermentation vessel, airlock, hydrometer, syphon, sanitiser and 30 bottles (28 for Cantina). Our wine starter kits bundle the essentials, and the Cellar 7 Equipment Starter Kit is built specifically for that range.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Solomon Grundy Classic, Gold and Platinum?
They're three tiers of the same range, all ready in around 7 days. Classic is the entry point; Gold uses better concentrate for more flavour; Platinum uses the highest grade for the most body, depth and complexity.
Which wine kit is fastest to drink?
Cellar 7, Cantina, WineBuddy, and all three Solomon Grundy tiers are ready to bottle in about 7 days, though like all wine it improves further with a few weeks in the bottle. Magnum takes around 2 weeks, On The House around 4 weeks, Beaverdale and Winexpert Classic 4–6 weeks, and Winexpert Reserve and Private Reserve 6–8 weeks.
Do all wine kits need extra sugar?
No. Budget kits like Solomon Grundy Gold (3kg), WineBuddy (4kg) and Magnum (3.5kg) need you to add sugar yourself; every other range here — Cellar 7, Cantina, Solomon Grundy Platinum, On The House, Beaverdale, and all three Winexpert tiers — includes everything needed.
Which wine kit is best value?
Magnum and Solomon Grundy Classic are the cheapest per bottle. The rest cost progressively more as concentrate volume and quality goes up, from Cellar 7 and Cantina at the everyday-premium end through to Winexpert Reserve and Private Reserve at the top, which is reflected in both price and how long they take.
